Smugglers

The initial task of the design team was to embody the spirit and character of the original Smugglers, which was a staple within the community. In addition, the regulars were used to the intimately immersive environment, implying that the project was even more challenging. The design team swathed the space in a mixture of tones and textures that bring out a subtle rustic charm despite a thoroughly modern design language. This is enhanced by floral decor that creates a lush backdrop; the restaurant’s aesthetic of rustic refinement lusciously reflects the menu’s philosophy and seasonal ingredients. The restaurant unfolds across four consecutive spaces, featuring an outdoor area, a bar, an area dedicated to comfy eating and the main dining area next to the semi-open kitchen. Positioned near the back of the restaurant, the glass-enclosed kitchen allows patrons to closely observe the chef in action, transforming humble vegetables into haute cuisine dishes through a variety of techniques. More than a gesture of showmanship, the kitchen acts as a backdrop of the restaurant, encapsulating Smuggler’s mission to be a place where food is consumed, and connections are made.
